The concept of health and community medicine for older people has become a reference for WHO in Europe and worldwide. The humanization of care, the promotion of the rights of older people, anticipatory and continuous care, the prevention of therapeutic abandonment, ill-treatment, malnutrition, social isolation and sedentary lifestyle have become the basis for health promotion and "Ageing Well" programmes.
The physician who cares for the elderly patient must be able to differentiate normal ageing from abnormal ageing and recognize the atypical presentations of the diseases most frequent in this age group. Similarly, he/she must be able to recognize geriatric syndromes and the differences in the natural history and preferred treatments of diseases specific to the elderly patient.
